About

Silica (silicon dioxide) is a trace mineral involved in collagen cross-linking and connective tissue integrity. Research suggests silicon may support hair shaft strength and thickness by contributing to keratin structure. A randomized trial using orthosilicic acid showed improved hair tensile strength and thickness over 9 months.

How It Works

Contributes to collagen and keratin cross-linking; supports connective tissue integrity around hair follicles; enhances hair shaft mechanical properties.

Evidence For Conditions

Side Effects

  • Generally well tolerated at recommended doses
  • Mild gastrointestinal discomfort (rare)
  • Kidney stone risk in predisposed individuals at very high doses

Drug & Supplement Interactions

  • Aluminum-containing antacids (silicon may increase aluminum absorption)
  • Diuretics (may affect silicon excretion)
